We both knew that a UV printer can directly print on anything, but we never realized it could custom light paintings.
Light painting is a fun project that combines layers and light to bring a photograph to life in a creative way! If you’re a creator, you might find the process complicated. Typically, you need to prepare different layers like line drafts and shadow layers. You have to carefully cut out sections of the shadowed photo where you expect light to pass through, among other meticulous steps.
But now, with a UV printer, you can easily finish all the printed layers, simplifying the entire process.

All you need is a regular transparent acrylic sheet. First, print the shadow layer using black ink to prevent light from passing through. Next, print the line art with white ink. By printing twice on the same acrylic, the painting will be complete. It’s quite simple, right? Compared to traditional methods, directly digital UV printing saves you time and steps, such as cutting and layering.
Keep in mind that the UV printer is capable of full-color printing, not just black and white. This means you can add vibrant colors to your light paintings, making your creations even more stunning and dynamic.
How to create design
There are many tutorial videos on YouTube that show how to create designs using Inkscape or your preferred photo editor to transform your ideas into beautiful line art and shadow effects. These tutorials guide you through the process of preparing your design for UV printing, making it easier to achieve professional-quality results. With these designs, a UV printer can quickly produce all the light effects you desire, bringing your creative visions to life with precision and efficiency. This technology not only speeds up the production process but also enhances the quality and detail of your light paintings.
How much printing cost
As a digital printer, the Suntrix UV printer offers low printing costs, down to $0.5 per square meter. Let’s break down the costs to produce a light painting.
Assume the painting size is 9*7 inches. The printing cost is $0.05, which is almost negligible for the ink. The cost of a blank acrylic sheet is $0.7. Therefore, the total cost of goods per custom UV-printed painting is $0.75, excluding the craft box.
If you check on Amazon, a light painting of this size sells for around $18. Clearly, the profit margin is substantial.
