As UV printers become more popular, more and more users are incorporating them into their printing businesses. Many customers wonder, “Does a UV printer require maintenance?” As a manufacturer with 12 years of experience, I’ve listed some key points to help keep your printer in top condition and ensure it meets your order demands.
Printhead Maintenance
- Turn It On Daily – Power up your printer at least once a day and run a nozzle test to keep the ink flowing. If you’re not using it for more than 3 days, add moisturizing fluid (protection fluid) to the ink cap and press the lock button on the control panel.
- Check the Printhead Surface – At the end of the day, inspect the printhead for dried ink or varnish. Use a non-woven fabric to gently wipe off any excess to prevent clogging.
- Keep Printhead Cables Dry – If you notice ink on the printhead cables, turn off the printer immediately. Do NOT turn it back on if it’s wet! Remove the cable, dry it completely, then reinstall it and check for short circuits.
- Use Fresh Ink – Ink expires in 8-12 months, and old ink can clog the nozzle. Stir the ink regularly and turn on the white ink stirring switch to prevent sediment buildup.
- Maintain Proper Printhead Height – Keep a 2mm gap between the printhead and your material to avoid damage and ensure high-quality prints.
- Clean Under the Printhead – Wipe the metal parts under the printhead regularly to prevent print issues.
- Avoid Reflective Materials – UV light reflecting off shiny surfaces can clog the printhead.
- Store the Printer & Ink Properly – Keep both away from direct sunlight since UV light can harden the ink inside the machine.
- Use Recommended Ink – Mixing different brands or types of ink may lead to clogging and damage. Stick with original or factory-approved inks to keep your printer safe.
General Maintenance Guide
1. Ink Capping Station
Ink can drip onto the cleaning station during ink loading or cleaning. Regularly clean the station with cleaning liquid to prevent buildup.
2. Raster Strip/Encoder
The raster strip helps ensure printing accuracy. If misaligned or scratched, it can cause print errors. Check its position regularly and clean it if needed. If scratched, replace it immediately.
3. Rail Lubrication
Both the printhead carriage rail and platform rail need lubrication. Clean away old lubricant before applying new oil. If you use the printer frequently, lubricate the rails once a month.
4. Vacuum Platform (If Applicable)
The vacuum platform holds print materials in place. Keep the holes clear of debris and make sure no liquids enter the air intake holes to avoid fan damage.
5. Replace Ink Dampers Regularly
Swap out your ink dampers at least once a year.
6. Replace Ink Cap Frequently
Change the ink cap every 3-6 months to maintain proper sealing.
7. Keep the Metal Shell Clean
Wipe off any dripped ink to prevent corrosion.
8. UV Lamp Maintenance
Ink splashes can reduce lamp efficiency over time. Clean the radiator every 2-3 months and wipe the lamp surface with cleaning fluid once a month. Wait until the lamp cools down before cleaning!
9. X-Axis Bearing
Since the bearing connects the motor and belt, lubricate it regularly to extend its lifespan.
10. Belt Check
Inspect the belt often. If you see cracks or wear, replace it immediately.
11. Wiper Maintenance
The wiper removes excess ink from the printhead. Replace it about once a month or sooner if it gets overloaded with ink. Make sure it sits 1mm away from the printhead without touching it.
12. Proper Ink Storage
- Keep ink at 18-28°C (64-82°F).
- Avoid direct sunlight and high temperatures.
- Unopened ink lasts 8-10 months; use within 6 months after opening.
- Never mix different ink brands or types to avoid clogs.
13. Ink Pump Maintenance
The ink pump is crucial for ink loading and cleaning. If it stops vibrating or doesn’t drain ink, replace it. Also, after printing each day, flush the ink cap with cleaning fluid by pressing the clean button. Replace the ink pump every 10-12 months.
14. Empty the Waste Ink Bottle
Don’t let it overflow—check it often and empty it when full.
15. Printhead Replacement
If the printhead is completely clogged or burned out, it won’t work and must be replaced.
Following these maintenance tips will keep your UV printer in top condition and ensure consistent, high-quality prints. Happy printing!
